A Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is an injection of anesthetic (numbing medicine) around a key nerve center for our “fight or flight” response, the stellate ganglion. It is used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), anxiety, and some forms of chronic pain. 

 

A SGB works by “resetting” the nerves involved in the sympathetic nervous system. It is similar to when your computer is glitching and you force shut down and reboot. By temporarily numbing the nerves, they can reset and reboot back to a “healthier state” (i.e. the signals they send are normalized). Many conditions involve “sympathetic dominance” where the fight or flight response is in overdrive, and the SGB helps alleviate this cause. 

 

The treatment is simple, takes about 30 minutes total with a 20-30 minute observation period following. It is a single injection done under ultrasound guidance from the side of the neck. There are sensitive structures in the area that are accounted for and avoided by skillfully using ultrasound imaging. The anesthetic is injected, the needle is removed, your temperature is taken as a way to ensure the proper effect, then you’re observed for a short period of time before checking out. The beneficial effects of the treatment are generally immediate.
